revelations
in my trip to ny, i've discovered something about myself: i can be extremely silly once i've imbibed the optimum amount of alcohol which, isn't much.
case in point:
a friend and i went to a japanese restaurant for lunch. being asian and slightly slanted in the eyes, plus the fact that i had my hair spiked (too much gel in the morning) they immediately assumed that we were japanese and asked us if we wanted a drink. in japanese. we looked at our waitress dumbly and said: "huh?" that's when she figured us out.
now, i understand a little japanese, so long as it's spoken really slowly and very clearly. like when you're speaking to a slightly deaf person, you have to enunciate each phonetic syllable and yet you still end up losing more than half of the message; that's me right there, in japanese.
i've also come to realize that there're two things that i can fluidly say in japanese and they would be: "may i please have a glass of water? and: "where is the bathroom?" two very important and life-saving sentences, especially if you've either eaten too much wasabi or partook of the elixir called sake a tad bit too many times.
finally, my japanese only comes out when i'm tipsy. maybe that's why they understand me. i bet if i wasn't drunk, they wouldn't know what i was saying because it wasn't slurred enough.
anyway, we were close to finishing our meal so we asked for the check. after signing it and all, i had to go water the one-eyed snake. so, I asked our server where the bathroom was. in japanese. he looked at me dumbly and i figured that maybe i did have too much alcohol and he couldn't understand me so i asked again, this time, in english.
he nodded, and pointed the way. no words coming out the mouth of this man.
i get out of the bathroom after my business and go straight to the car. i find my friend cracking up. i look at him, wondering what the big joke is. he tells me: "you fool! that guy you asked wasn't japanese! you would've had more luck if you said donde esta el baƱo instead!"
ah.
apparently, the big joke, was me.
