i'm all shook up

i was having an exchange lesson with one of the couples i started off on their basic program many months back. they're wonderful. initially, they came in without the man knowing that they were coming to a dance studio; it was her surprise to him and he only found out about it when they were in the parking lot of the studio and the car engine had been shut off. they were also only beginning to date then. now? they're happily married.

they're of a mixed ethnicity: he's a Latino Lover, and she's an All-American Girl. because of the difference in language, she's learning how to speak Spanish.

having a spattering of that language ingrained in me, i tend to sputter a few words every so often when i do get to have the pleasure of working with them in their dancing. tonight was no different.

we were working on their rumba motion earlier, and a fast Elvis swing tune was being used by one of the other private lessons going on then. she commented on it by saying something like the music didn't go with the background of the dance that they were doing. it was a fast American tune with a Latin dance. i quipped and said that Elvis was actually of Latin descent, and he's actually El Vis. that's when he interjected that El Visco meant cross-eyed in his language.

suddenly, everything made more sense. maybe that's why Elvis had that hip gyration; he was actually just so far gone that he was getting cross-eyed and couldn't keep his legs together decently anymore.
