IRM in MS Office
so, having recently found time and a renewed passion for writing offline, i notice a few new icons in the MS Office that i am using. having been brought up on older versions, i find myself extremly spoiled with this one. it has got everything that a person who fashions themself as a writer needs and then some.
there was this one icon that i found quite intriguing: a piece of paper, much like the Make New Document icon, except with a circular no entry sign in front and slightly to the lower right of it. i mouseover and click it, and behold! it's almost a boon from the copywriting gods.
as far as i can tell, and according to the popup that, well, popped up, it's supposed to restrict access to what i write from being unscrupiously copied and edited and downright soiled. that's not to say that my so-called writings couldn't stand a bit of wash and polish, but it at least keeps its integrity.
so, the question is: should i or shouldn't i? true, it keeps others from copying my works without permission, but do i really want to? i mean, i'm not that arrogant to think that there may be some out there that want to, nor am i that ignorant and naïve to think that there are none.
i believe that part of the beauty of freedom of speech is the sharing of it. of course there will be people with opposing views to myself, but that's what discussion is all about. besides, some arguments beget more creativity and i'm always game for that.
thankfully, i have no need to disseminate anything that i've written, except to JD, mogs, and the closest of friends and family. perhaps in due time, i will reconsider this avenue. until then: read, appreciate, and should the need arise, please copy only when permitted.
